―Mamá, mamá, ¿Me escuchas?

Carlos Res Cogitans

Everything happening as part of one’s rites and predilection sensation. This ubiquitous feeling which is faith acquisition’s method, language’s faith. My life started when I walked down the mountain, when I found that smell my ants used to carry by their austere hands. I was immerse among centuries that I didn’t understand, the ones I wouldn’t understand later either, and I met coffee odor before knowing it’s color was brown, and mountainsides before knowing they were mountains.

My heart was always running away, easy to be surprised like it is when one knows something is coming because the top of the hill has been reached. When did I learn the proper cardiac protocol coming from facing the immediate slope? I don’t know. I think for me it was natural inasmuch the landscape which drawn my childhood. Some trains tried to make my aunts hands fragrance escape towards the sea through Santa Marta and Buenaventura; that was my first awareness of what was outside.

Three great walls connecting the sky saw me as a kid; they transmitted and mixed my echo through circular affinity and opposition connections which constituted the valley of what ended as what I am. My dad used to work fixing railroads and I remember that sometimes I used to go with him. I was seven years old and I remember those Nerudians farewells of my mom: “you will bring from the mountains happy flowers, copihues, dark hazelnuts, and wild baskets of kisses”, she used to tell me, while I used to answer her back: “I’m going to work mom, I’m already a little man!” That was my mom’s last farewell before she died as well.

―Mom, mother, can you hear me? ―I asked her when I noticed her fast breathing right after she stopped talking with me.

―She is sleeping my son, she hadn’t recognized anyone since two days ago until she talked with you ―my father answered me back.

―Tell her I’m going to be working cuz I’m a little man, tell her, close to her ear please! ―I told my dad.

I was supervising the night cleaning shift at a New Orleans School when I received that call; when I hung up I crossed the main hallway, the student’s trophy area, some classrooms and I reached School’s episcopal chapel; I sat alone, cried, and felt a sort of nature’s law humiliation coming from me being unable to be there in Colombia at that very moment. I had bought a flight ticked for next day but I knew that taking it would mean not to be permitted to come back to The States since I was not neither resident nor American citizen yet and my visa had expired some time before.

From my quiet and nicodemicus vigil, perhaps trying to palliate a little that heavy sadness I was felling, I started exploring my own nullification, perhaps in reality my own ratification based on the increase of my survival skills given as a gratifying present by the new latitude I where I live and that monetary help sometimes I sent to Colombia. Physically and spiritually distant I thought about what I was and what simultaneously was perceived as what I am under this type of action that was its own result even before it began.

Believing and desiring have been my route foundations. Three long rocky swords injured me and took me away for the first time from my mom; I then started bleeding a green liquid, the one that once accumulated everybody called experience. I went down sometimes following those candid sensations provided by discovering new places, then I went up, and down, up and down and up and down again. Going back to meet her again in order to share what was discovered was always a type of ascending. When I was a student at Bogota, I visited for the first time Monserrate Hill and then I noticed my blood containing some clay and concrete among its previous green nature. I believed then on all the possibilities of my youth, I believed then on a conscious control of my moments.

Over time that control seems to be a ghost; like if the sources of all my previous actions were in fact a sort of causal law existing in order to compensate the temporary equilibrium requested: I was entailed to walk over the mountains with my dad –first sign of the manifest destiny of working in order to be a well breed man- and I did it,  was supposed to study in order to get a better job, and I studied, I was supposed to be married and I got married, to have kids, and my daughters were born, to emit opinions related with family events, and I rejected and accepted cousins, uncles, and other relatives behaviors; I needed to protect my family from Medellin’s Cartel revenge and I left Colombia and flew to The States.

It was necessary to work in another country and I did it, I needed to learn to speak English and I learned it. How can I be conscious of what I’ve done if most of what I have faced it’s been presented in the same way inertia affects a body when is turning its way, body which will return to its previous immobility condition once its then current movement is finished?, all seems to at the end pretty much like a dynamic law. Is someone really aware of what that person is doing when once reached the previous existent equilibrium he or she will be waiting for the next challenge in order to build his or her nature? I asked myself without felling any type or regret but just by the consequences of the mere question. Perhaps repressed desires are not the ones which need to be explored but that transition between motion and equilibrium that seems to have a mysterious participation from the physical realm to the spiritual one. Perhaps the question just needs to be asked, not implying that our decisions are going to be affected.

Suddenly, while I was on that episcopal chapel that looked very alike to a catholic one, I found glass and mirror deposits in my blood; they had stolen those blue sky reflections coming from very tall buildings in order to communicate to the ground through white light lines that the ethereal nature of human dreaming is deeply rooted on the ground.

Two hours after this latitude and altitude collage, I got the call. My mom had died.

I was about to tell my dad that I was on my way when he interrupted me:

―Son, you must stay there ―he said.

When I walked towards that chapel altar that didn’t have a crucified Jesus behind of it I slowly hear some crystals crunches, their sound was in English, Spanish and in a transplanted language known as Spanglish. Languages are vaster realities than those political, historical and geographical entities we call nation,* through them people pray and declare at the same time the constitution of their idiosyncrasy by it; from them people exists. That’s the reason why they happened at any time, everywhere.
